The New Body
by Terri Glass

All night I am being bathed in a light
and my eyes are tautly shut.
A fine toothed rake combs through my blood.
The sweet voice of my lover speaks right in my ear,
though he is miles away.
My mother’s heartbeat pulses through
the phantom umbilical.
All night I am falling through
this invisible trap door of heaven.
I dream the lost jade ring
reappears at the kitchen windowsill.
I wake and feel like the Virgin Mary
wearing blue velvet
at the very last Christmas party.

This is a new body being born.
A body who reclaims the Egyptian dust
of Nefertiti’s tomb.
The body who knows the forgotten halls
of Tibetan monasteries.
A body who hungers not for bread,
but continually savors the cabernet
at the celebration brunch for Christ on Earth.

All night I am being bathed in this light.
Adorned with jade and velvet,
I slip through the other side,
claiming dust and starlight,
bone and flesh-
the effervescent body of the future.
